Top Gear Festival

Last Saturday (16 june 2012) Nic (my boyfriend) and I went to the Top Gear festival in Durban.  It was fantastic. I’m not one for cars; I can’t even put a name to a car. Top Gear showed us some vintage and some fast cars, was fascinating to see. I know a good car when I see one. I was very impressed with all the cars that had been wrapped. My favorite was a car wrapped in wooden looking paper and one wrapped in pink and glitter paper. I found my dream car, the Fiate 500.

After seeing all the exhibitions we went to go watch some stunt driving. They were driving through traffic cones. The thing I found scary was that they were driving so fast and the guy sweeping the dirt of the tar was just standing there, cars driving around him. They gave people the opportunity for R100 each to go in the stunt car while he drove around the cones.

Later we checked the motor bikes do stunts in the air. Was so freaky to watch as it looked like at any moment they could fall and die. They went in the air and one even let go of the car for a second or 2.

At about 3:30 the street circuit started. We didn’t get a seat to watch it so we had to stand behind the fence. This was the time where we first met the Top Gear presenters, James May, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson. Then came the Stig. A bunch of cars went by, even the Stig drove past, was awesome.  I love how they made the circuit South African. They had a taxi do a trick where it drove on   2 wheels.

That took about an hour and a bit. By this time we were hungry so we went to get a burger. We were in the line for 10 min and they then told us they were sold out. Bunny chow was also sold out. Eventually we found a place that still had some chicken wraps. When we got to order ours they were R40 each, such a rip off but we were not standing in another que.

It was then about time for the show. They show was so hilarious. They made it into the car Olympics. They had curling with cars and a sweeper, bowling with a shopping trolley, chariot race with the Stig, cars on fire and car soccer. I think my photos will tell it all better than I can. South Africa won the soccer against England. They had a street drag race for a few min then a cop car came to brake up the party.

Well worth my money, or lets say well worth the debt (still have to pay Nic back for the ticket).

Next time you all must go.

About Me

My name is Nicola and I love creating new things. I am a photographer so one of my favourite things is making greeting cards using my original photographs. The cards are blank inside so they can be used for all occasions. I also love trying out all sorts of crafts and enjoy knitting and making beaded jewellery. I’m also busy studying Early Childhood Development and I am working at a Pre School called Makabongwe Methodist Pre School. They are a NPO started by the Manning Road Methodist Church. We serve the community of the Warwick Avenue area of Durban.
